Lifting Safety Training in Dublin, Ireland: 7 Mistakes Proper Training Can Prevent

Lifting equipment can make difficult jobs much easier. But when a lift goes wrong, the consequences can be serious.

That’s why Lifting Safety Training in Dublin, Ireland should be about more than completing a course. Workers need to understand how loads behave, how lifting accessories work, and what can go wrong before a load leaves the ground.

The need for this practical approach remains clear in 2026. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) reported 58 work-related fatalities in Ireland during 2025, up from 36 in 2024. Being struck or crushed by falling objects, machinery or vehicles, and falls from height were among the leading causes.

The HSA also continues to emphasise competent operation, proper planning, supervision and safe lifting practices.

So, what mistakes can proper training help prevent?

1. Choosing the Wrong Sling

A sling isn't simply something you attach to a load and lift.

The sling must suit the load, attachment points and lifting arrangement. Its condition and rated capacity also matter.

Different loads can require different lifting accessories. A web sling may be suitable for one application, while a chain sling may be more appropriate for another.

Training helps workers understand these differences before making a lift.

The HSA states that lifting accessories should be selected according to factors such as the load, gripping points, attachment tackle and the configuration of the sling.

At Hoist Equipment Suppliers, you'll find industrial slings and rigging equipment alongside chains, shackles and other lifting accessories. This practical product knowledge can support training that reflects the equipment workers actually encounter.

2. Ignoring Sling Angles

Sling angles are easy to overlook when you're focused on getting a job done.

But changing the angle can change the forces placed on each sling leg.

A worker who understands this doesn't just look at the load's weight. They consider how that weight is distributed across the lifting arrangement.

Irish guidance specifically recognises that the angle between sling legs can affect whether the safe working load of a sling leg is exceeded.

Good Lifting Safety Training in Dublin, Ireland should therefore teach workers how sling configuration affects capacity.

It's a small detail that can make a major difference to a controlled lift.

3. Exceeding the Working Load Limit

Every lifting operation starts with a basic question: how much does the load weigh?

The next question should be whether the equipment and accessories are rated to handle it safely.

The safe working load (SWL) must be clearly marked on lifting equipment, and the HSA advises that workers should never exceed it.

The same principle applies when choosing slings, shackles, hoists and other lifting accessories.

Don't guess a load's weight. Don't assume similar-looking equipment has the same capacity. And don't treat a rated capacity as a suggestion.

Training helps workers develop the habit of checking ratings before lifting rather than discovering a limitation during the lift.

4. Using Damaged Lifting Accessories

A sling, chain or shackle can look usable while having damage that makes it unsafe.

That's why visual checks matter.

Workers should know what they're looking for before equipment is used. Depending on the accessory, that can include cuts, excessive wear, deformation, corrosion or other signs of damage.

The HSA advises that lifting equipment should be checked before use. It also states that lifting accessories such as slings require regular examination by a competent person, with six-month examination intervals applying to lifting accessories in relevant circumstances.

Training doesn't replace formal examination. Instead, it helps workers recognise when equipment should be taken out of service and reported.

Hoist Equipment Suppliers also provides inspection, load testing, repair and re-certification services, helping businesses address equipment safety alongside operator competence.

5. Getting Load Balance Wrong

A load doesn't always behave as expected.

An uneven load can shift, tilt or swing as soon as it leaves the ground. If the lifting points aren't suitable, the problem can become worse.

This is why workers need to consider the load's centre of gravity, attachment points and overall stability before lifting.

A useful lift starts before the hoist or crane moves.

The HSA requires lifting operations to be properly planned and appropriately supervised. Where operators cannot see the full path of a load, communication with a competent person is also required.

That planning mindset is a key part of effective Lifting Safety Training in Dublin, Ireland.

6. Standing Beneath a Suspended Load

This sounds obvious, yet it's one of the most important rules in any lifting environment.

Never treat the area beneath a suspended load as a convenient walkway or working space.

The HSA's guidance states that measures should be taken to ensure employees aren't present under suspended loads. Loads should also not be moved over unprotected workplaces normally occupied by workers.

A good training programme should make this principle practical.

Workers need to understand exclusion zones, positioning, safe routes and what to do when a load moves unexpectedly.

This is particularly important on busy construction and industrial sites around Dublin, where several activities may happen in the same work area.

7. Failing to Communicate Clearly

A lifting operation can involve several people.

One person may operate the equipment. Another may attach the load. A slinger or signaller may guide the movement.

If everyone isn't using clear signals and agreed communication methods, confusion can develop quickly.

Irish requirements state that lifting operations must be appropriately supervised, while distinctive signals must be easy for the operator to hear or see. Where the operator cannot observe the full load path, a competent person must communicate with the operator to guide the operation.

That's why slinger and signaller training matters.

It gives workers a clearer understanding of their role and helps create a consistent approach to communication during lifting operations.

What Does This Mean for Dublin Businesses in 2026?

Recent HSA activity reinforces the importance of keeping workplace safety practical and current.

In February 2026, the HSA joined an all-island construction safety campaign focused on preventing falls from height. The campaign included inspections across construction sites and highlighted that falls remain a leading cause of serious injury and death in construction.

The HSA's 2026 fatality statistics are also being updated throughout the year, showing that workplace safety remains an active concern rather than a once-a-year compliance exercise.

For businesses, that means training should connect with everyday work.

Workers should know how to select equipment, assess loads, inspect accessories, communicate during lifts and recognise unsafe situations.

That's the real value of Lifting Safety Training in Dublin, Ireland.

Choosing Practical Lifting Safety Training

When you're choosing training for your team, look beyond the certificate.

Ask whether the training reflects the equipment and tasks your workers actually handle.

For example, Hoist Equipment Suppliers provides safety training covering areas such as rigging and slinging, gantry crane operation, slinger and signaller training, working at height, harness safety and confined-space training.

The company also supplies equipment including manual and powered hoists, lever hoists, winches, lifting magnets, chains, web and round slings, shackles and other lifting accessories.

That combination is useful because training can be discussed alongside the equipment used in real working environments.

And remember, training is only one part of a safe lifting system. Equipment still needs appropriate inspection, maintenance, examination and certification. The HSA requires lifting equipment to be examined by a competent person at specified intervals, depending on its use.

FAQs About Lifting Safety Training

Is lifting safety training required in Ireland?

Irish workplace safety requirements require lifting equipment to be operated by a competent person, or by someone under the direct supervision of a competent person for training. Lifting operations must also be properly planned and supervised.

How often should lifting equipment be examined?

The required interval depends on the equipment and its use. HSA guidance identifies 12-month intervals for certain lifting equipment and six-month intervals for lifting accessories such as slings in relevant applications.

Does training replace lifting equipment inspection?

No. Training develops worker competence, while inspection and thorough examination assess the condition and safety of equipment. Businesses need both elements.

Why is slinger and signaller training important?

Slingers and signallers play an important role in attaching loads and communicating with operators. Clear communication becomes especially important when the operator cannot see the complete path of the load.

Where can businesses arrange lifting safety training in Ireland?
